There is no shame in admitting that you set yourself far too many New Year’s resolutions last time, and you did not manage to keep any of them. When you are handing out your happy new year 2018 wishes to everyone, you are probably thinking about your resolutions more than at any other time in your life. As you are being told happy New Year 2018 wishes by others, and they are telling you their resolutions, you are probably thinking that you should have some of your own. But we think the most important aspect is having resolutions that you are going to keep.
The problem for so many of us is that we get caught up in the moment. We are caught up in that phase where we are just thinking about how the New Year is going to translate into a new us. But that is not how it works. You are the way that you are for a reason. You have certain habits and behaviors. And you have certain things that you enjoy, and some things that you do not. That is just how you have grown up, and the type of person that you are. There is no shame in it. And changing yourself completely is hard.
Not only is it hard, but we would say that it is almost impossible. If you have written down five or six new year resolutions, the reality is that you are trying to change your entire life with this list. And maybe you can make it work for a few weeks. But you are not going to keep this going for long. You cannot do a complete 180 degrees change on the type of person that you are and how you live your life. That is just not going to happen.
We have to stop thinking that having a New Year resolution means that we need to change our entire way of living. What you have to do is think about these resolutions in terms of small and tangible goals that you can obtain. We feel like you would have a much better time if you were thinking about your resolutions in this way. You would be able to keep those resolutions, and you would be a lot happier with yourself when you manage to do that. And that is what we want for you.
So, if you have some resolutions in mind, keep them small. Maybe you want to add a day of gym work into your week, and that is a resolution you want to make. We think that is a good idea. Saying you will be going to the gym each day, and eating so much healthier – those are resolutions that are going to fail. But saying you will head to the gym for 30 or 45 minutes one time a week is not so bad. It is a resolution that you can keep with a little bit of discipline, and you will feel happy that you made this change.
